What are dental implants?

dental implants

A dental implant is a two-part structure. It consists of a metal post that is fixed to the jaw bone and the crown, which is then fixed to the post.

Implants can be used to replace a single tooth, or two posts can be used to anchor a bridge of multiple teeth. Alternatively, they can be used to affix dentures, giving you a natural and secure set of teeth.

Benefits of implants?

Implants are a great alternative to dentures, crowns, and bridges. They are natural-looking and long-lasting. If you take care of your oral health care, an implant can last decades without needing any special attention.

Replacing lost teeth can prevent the weakening and movement of the remaining teeth.

When would you get implants?

If you have one or more missing teeth, then you should consider a dental implant. If you have existing teeth that are in poor condition, you may want to have them removed and replaced with implants or a secured bridge rather than having a crown of filling.

The procedure

Before you can be fitted with dental implants, you will need to be carefully assessed by our team to ensure that you are a good candidate. In order for an implant to be successful, you need to have enough bone structure in the jaw to be able to support the implant. You will also need to have healthy gums.

Even if you are found to be unsuitable at first, you may be able to undergo a bone and gum graft.

To fit the implant, you will undergo a procedure to embed the implant into the jawbone. This is usually done under a local anesthetic. You will be given antibiotics to prevent any infection and instructions on how to care for your mouth while the bone heals and bonds with the implant. A temporary crown will usually be fitted to the implant. Once the swelling has gone down and the implant has bonded with the jaw bone, your permanent crown will be fitted.

You’ll be given advice on how to maintain your oral hygiene in order to keep your implants in top condition. Good gum health is vital and you may need to make some lifestyle changes such as giving up smoking.

You don’t need to anything special to maintain your implants, simply keep up a good brushing and flossing routine.
